The itinerary below represents a standard course. When you book, we will send you a questionnaire asking you your preferences about what you’d like to do and see and what your priorities are for the journey. We take these into consideration and adapt each course accordingly. We will normally also have a chat with you about this on the phone to see what you’re hoping to get out of the course and make suggestions accordingly.

Day 1 – Saturday

Relaxing morning at the Hotel to recover from flight. Brunch together and introductions all round. Walking tour of Oaxaca City with our own knowledgeable guide. Welcome evening meal in Oaxaca at the famous restaurant El Quince Letras. Relax, socialize, enjoy the new sights and sounds of the Mexican evening.

Day 2 – Sunday

Breakfast in the courtyard of our accommodation. Visit to the archaeological site of Monte Alban with our own guide. Delicious buffet lunch at Restaurante Hacienda Cuilapam. After, visit to the “open chapel” of Cuilapam. Evening meal in Oaxaca*

Day 3 – Monday

Breakfast at our hotel. First day of the weaving course. Introduction to our weaving family followed by a walk to identify and collect some of the plants and seeds used in dyeing. Lunch at the workshop or in Teotiltlan del Valle. Study of the dyeing process and then our first look at Zapotec designs and how to design your own project. Evening meal in Oaxaca*

Day 4 – Tuesday

Breakfast at our hotel. Continuation of our designs and general instruction on setting up looms and related processes. Lunch at the workshop or en Teotiltlan del Valle. Start weaving our own projects. Evening meal in Oaxaca*

Day 5 – Wednesday

Breakfast at our hotel. A serious day of steady weaving with hands-on instruction. Lunch at the workshop or en Teotiltlan del Valle. A look at the various processes connected with weaving such as spinning, combing and netting. Evening meal in Oaxaca*

Day 6 – Thursday

Breakfast at our hotel. Students complete their weaving projects during the course of the day. Lunch at the workshop or en Teotiltlan del Valle. In the evening celebration and exhibition of all of the works of art! Traditional toasting of the completion with a drink of the local mezcal – a rather strong alcoholic beverage made from the heart of the maguey plant – but this isn’t compulsory! Day 7 – Friday

Breakfast at our hotel. Chef Gerardo from the “Cocina Oaxaqueña” will come and pick us up. Cooking class starts with a visit to the market for ingredients and then preparation of several typical Oaxacan dishes. The class will finish after we have eaten our culinary creations in good company with our chef and his family. In the Evening we will have a guided tour of the Textile Museum with a specially arranged expert. Evening meal in Oaxaca*

Day 8 – Saturday

Breakfast at our hotel. Our guide will be with us the whole day. We will start by visiting San Antonino Castillo Velasco famous for its intricate and colorful embroidery. We will stop at “barro rojo” (red clay) workshop which is owned by the renowned Aguilar family. Next a well earned lunch at Azucena Zapoteca and then a visit to the small town of Santo Tomas Jalieza for a back strap weaving demonstration with the Navarro Gomez family. In the next town, San Martin Tilcajete, we visit a workshop where young apprentices develop the skills and techniques for wood carving “alebrijes” – fantastic imaginary creatures- . Day 9 – Sunday

Breakfast at our hotel. Nuestro guia nos acompañará todo el día. We will start by visiting the astounding local market of Tlacolula, where every Sunday the indigenous peoples of the nearby villages come down to sell their unique and colorful wares. We will visit the famous ruins of the archaeological site of Mitla and then lunch at Restaurante Rancho Zapata. Next a visit to the widest tree in the world at Santa Maria del Tule. We will finish off with a demonstration of the production of mezcal. Evening meal in Oaxaca*

Day 10 – Monday

Breakfast at our hotel. Free day so that you can make your own purchases and visit any of the places you liked most in Oaxaca. We will meet up again in the evening for a farewell dinner at the Restaurante Catedral.

Day 11 – Tuesday

Breakfast at our hotel and sad goodbyes and each off back home. Transportation to the Airport.


* Please note that the cost of the evening meal evening meals will not normally be included in the price as we find most people prefer to roam the city a little at night and find one of the many beautiful spots to chat, drink and dine. There are two evening meals included, the welcome dinner and the farewell dinner.

Be aware that Mexicans tend to dine a fair bit later than in North America.
